Letter to Parents and Carers: Y8 Girls: Yorkshire Water/Hey Girls Project

Thu 19 Jun 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,

We would like to let you know about a workshop that is being held for students in Year 8 (girls) on Tuesday 24 June.

Outwood Academy Shafton has been approached by Yorkshire Water to work with them on a project to help support the reduction in blockages within our sewer networks. This will help reduce the risk of internal and external flooding for customers and contribute to keeping sewer pipes clear of unwanted debris.

During this scheme, workshops will be offered which will explore the benefits that reusable products, such as period pads, can have on the environment. Making the switch from a disposable to a reusable period product can have a massive positive impact on the number of blockages we have within Yorkshire’s sewer systems, whilst saving families money.

Period education can be seen as a taboo subject, but there’s a lot of information that can really help all young people understand what is going on with their bodies, and why. In addition, there are many new products on the market that can be reused, which in turn reduces costs of purchasing and helps keep our sewers clear.

Yorkshire Water has teamed up with Hey Girls to deliver this project. Hey Girls launched in January 2018 with the aim of eradicating period poverty in the UK. Since January 2018, their Buy One Donate One model has so far enabled them to donate on average 30 million period products to those who need them. But for Hey Girls, ending period poverty is about much more than just providing free products. They want to ensure that everyone has access to a high standard of education around menstruation and menstrual health.

On 24th June 2025, students will attend a girls only workshop session led by the Yorkshire Water Education Team to discuss how blockages can impact our local environment and talk about reusable period products (how they work and how to take care and wash them for reuse). At the end of the workshop, each young person will be given the opportunity to take some products home.

Yours faithfully,
