Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope this letter finds you well. As we begin the second half of the term, I wanted to share some important updates regarding the GCSE History curriculum for our Year 10 students.
Students will shortly be concluding their study of Early Elizabethan England and moving on to Medicine Through Time and the Western Front. Now that they have settled into the GCSE course, we will begin undertaking our ‘key indicator’ pieces. These will take place weekly and provide students with valuable opportunities to apply and strengthen the skills they have been developing in lessons. Each piece will be marked and returned with feedback to help guide their progress. This independent piece of work will be evaluated by teachers, who will provide feedback to your child. This assessment model was trialled last year in both Outwood Shafton and other academies in the Trust, and was really successful in supporting students to develop the knowledge, independence and resilience required for the History GCSE exams.
In preparation for these assessments, students will complete regular recall activities in lessons and weekly homework tasks that complement classroom learning. The completion of these homework assignments is crucial in ensuring a feeling of confidence and of being prepared for assessments.
Research from the Education Endowment Foundation and the Department for Education shows that well-planned homework and revision can boost pupil progress by up to five months on average, particularly in secondary school, when tasks are meaningful, linked to class learning, and supported with feedback.
Your support in encouraging your child to complete these revision and homework tasks is greatly appreciated, as it makes a significant difference to academic progress. Thank you, as always, for your continued support. I firmly believe that collaboration between parents and teachers is key to ensuring the best outcomes for our students in their final exams.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss further support for your child, please do not hesitate to contact me by email at j.glover@shafton.outwood.com.
Yours sincerely,
Jasmin Glover
