Letter to Parents: end of academic year

Mon 17 Jul 2023
Dear Parents/ Carers,

As we prepare to end our academic year, I wanted to take the opportunity to write to you and thank you for your ongoing support in maintaining our expectations and standards. I know that we have made a real impact in the last few weeks and have prepared all year groups ready to step-up in September.

We have had an incredible summer term with lots to celebrate and to be proud of. Year 11 conducted themselves impeccably during the exams and we celebrated in style at Prom and our Prom Breakfast. We look forward to celebrating with them again in August when students will receive the outcome of their hard work on results day.

We have had a number of highlights this term:  Y9 Graduations, Y6 transition events, Shafton Shines, BikeFest and our trip to Paris, to name just a few. There have also been a huge number of very personal achievements, both in and out of the Academy, for some of our students. We have a lot of talent to celebrate! We thank our families for the good news stories that they regularly share with us.  Please keep checking our website and follow us on our socials for the most up to date information throughout the year.

We shared a letter earlier in the term in relation to our expectations for girls uniform from September and further information about uniform can be found on our website. There must be no rolling over of skirt waistbands. Students should wear the Outwood twin pleated skirt with the logo but if students would prefer to move to a non-logo skirt this must be box-pleat style.

I would also draw your attention to our policy on jewellery: a wrist watch is the only permitted item of jewellery; and on make-up: the policy says “discrete”: this means a small amount of concealer or foundation which we hope will help to support teenagers who may feel self-conscious about their skin, no other make-up items/false eyelashes/acrylic nails/gel nails are allowed to be worn.

The Academy will re-open to students in Y7 and Y11 on Wednesday 6th September at 8.25am.

Y8, Y9 and Y10 will return on Thursday 7 September at 8:25am.

Summer holidays are a special time for families and a chance for our young people to relax, recharge and have fun. Please remind our young people to be safe around open water, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue shared information with us earlier this year about water safety and you can find that information here.

Whatever you have planned, home or away, I wish you a very happy and a very safe summer on behalf of all of the staff here at Outwood Academy Shafton.

Yours faithfully,

Alison McQueen
