Letter for Y7 & Y8 Parents: STAR testing

Wed 10 Apr 2024
Dear Parent / Carer

Thank you for all your support so far this year with our Accelerated Reader programme for Years 7 and 8. Accelerated Reader gives teachers the information they need to monitor students’ reading practice and make informed decisions to guide their future learning. We recommend 20 minutes of reading per evening to allow for good and consistent progress in both reading and English.

The April term will see the return of our STAR reading tests which will take place weeks commencing 22nd and 29th April. This will test and help us to assess students’ reading ages and progress.  We would like to communicate how important this testing is for Years 7 and 8. These tests allow us to see evidence of the development of our students’ reading as this software allows us to monitor reading ages, meaning we can offer earlier intervention and sets accurate targets to allow teachers to assist the development of reading skills.

To access Accelerated Reader at home, students should follow the link below and enter their username and password.  This will allow them to complete quizzes and as parents you can see other books that they have read and quizzed on previously.   Please find the link below:

We are currently trialling an add-on for Accelerated Reader called MyOn. This is an extension of the Accelerated Reader platform and allows students to access books from a digital library (of over 6000 books). It can be accessed through the same link as noted above. In Year 7 and Year 8 students will also be able to access “projects” which allow students to read more books inspired by the novels they study in class. MyOn has been a success in classrooms across the English department and we know our students will also enjoy accessing this service from home.

Please contact your child's English teacher for any further information or with support around reading.

Yours faithfully

A Stroud
