Letter to Y9 Parents and Carers: RS Assessments

Dear Parents and Carers,
Upcoming Religious Studies Assessments: Year 9
I am writing to inform you that Year 9 students will be completing their upcoming Religious Studies assessments between Monday 28th September and Friday 9th October.
As with previous assessments, this is designed to check students' understanding of the key ethical and philosophical topics covered this term and to help guide their ongoing progress.
Assessment Structure and Content
The Year 9 assessment will follow the standard format: 10 multiple-choice questions to test core terminology and knowledge, followed by two essay questions assessing analytical writing and evaluation.
Year 9 Covered Topics
Students will be assessed on the foundational ethical and philosophical concepts covered so far:
- Do we need rules? (Morality, order, and governance).
- Is right and wrong from God? (Divine Command Theory and religious morality).
- Should we aim for everyone to be happy? (Utilitarianism and ethics).
- Is love really all around us? (Situation ethics and love as a moral principle).
Their knowledge will be tested through a series of multiple choice questions. They will then answer two essay questions.
Essay Topics:
- The importance of key Islamic teachings in the daily lives of Muslims.
- What factors influence a person's individual ethical beliefs, and how those influences operate.
How Students Can Prepare
Students should review their RS Google Classroom with a particular focus on this half-terms knowledge organiser on the lead up the assessment. We recommend practicing both short memory recall for the multiple-choice section and planning key arguments and examples for the two essay topics.
