I hope that your child has had a positive start to their GCSE Science studies this academic year.
I have recently shared information with all Year 11 students about the upcoming Science assessments and revision expectations. I wanted to share the same information with you so that you can support your child with their preparation at home.
GCSE Science Preparation – Half Term 1
During the first half of the autumn term, students will be studying the Biology, Chemistry and Physics Paper 2 topics in preparation for their mock examinations, which will take place after the October half term.
The topics students will need to revise are:
Biology Paper 2
- B5 – Homeostasis and Response
- B6 – Inheritance, Variation and Evolution
- B7 – Ecology
Chemistry Paper 2
- C6 – The Rate and Extent of Chemical Reactions
- C7 – Organic Chemistry
- C8 – Chemical Analysis
- C9 – Chemistry of the Atmosphere
- C10 – Using Resources
Physics Paper 2
- P5 – Forces
- P6 – Waves
- P7 – Magnetism and Electromagnetism
A range of revision materials is available online at science.outwood.com, as well as through other useful resources such as BBC Bitesize and Save My Exams.
Year 11 Science Enrichment
Our Year 11 Science enrichment sessions are now up and running every Wednesday after school. These sessions are specifically designed to provide students with additional support and preparation for their mock examinations and are open to all Year 11 students.
We would encourage students to attend these sessions where possible, particularly if they would benefit from additional guidance with revision or exam preparation.
GCSE Summer Examination Dates
Please make a note of the following GCSE Science examination dates. The examinations are listed below in chronological order:
- Biology Paper 1: Tuesday 11 May – AM
- Chemistry Paper 1: Monday 17 May – AM
- Physics Paper 1: Tuesday 25 May – AM
- Biology Paper 2: Thursday 10 June – AM
- Chemistry Paper 2: Tuesday 15 June – AM
- Physics Paper 2: Friday 18 June – AM
Each exam is 1 hour and 15 minutes long and worth 70 marks.
It is important that students understand that the marks from each exam contribute equally towards their overall Science grade. Each paper is equally important. We would encourage you to support your child in maintaining a balanced approach to revision across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, rather than focusing solely on their preferred subject. This will give them the best opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and maximise their overall attainment.
