Letter to Parents and Carers: Strike action for teachers

Wed 11 Jun 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,

As I have previously communicated to you, the National Education Union (NEU) has confirmed that their teaching members will be taking industrial action in the form of strike days.  The next planned strike days are Tuesday 17 June, Wednesday 18 June and Thursday 19 June 2025.  On Thursday 19 June NASUWT will also take industrial strike action.

Following our risk assessment and due to the number of staff taking action, we have made the difficult decision to close the academy on Tuesday 17 June, Wednesday 18 June and Thursday 19 June 2025 to all students apart from Year 11 and 10 who will be expected to attend at the specific times shown below.

Y11 Information
Only students who are entered for these subjects need to attend exams or masterclasses.

Year 10 students must attend the academy to complete important mock exams and receive important assemblies on Tuesday 17 June and Thursday 19 June. Their times and dates are as below:

We will update you again if anything changes.

Whilst the academy will be closed to some students, online activities via Google Classroom or access to educational materials whilst at home will be available to Year 7-9 students. Please encourage your child to access the online resources below to continue their learning:

Students in all year groups in receipt of free school meals may attend between 12.30 and 1pm to pick up a grab bag. We will send out a text message for you to book this in advance.

*In order to ensure that we can communicate any changes to these plans at short notice; which may include on the day itself, we are asking parents/carers to ensure that we hold up to date emergency contact details.  If you do need to make any changes, please send to our dedicated email address for this purpose enquiries@shafton.outwood.com  We will always endeavour to minimise disruption as much as possible.

We understand that there will be concerns about the disruption but we want to give you this advance notice as possible and thank you in advance for your patience and understanding at this time.

Yours faithfully,
Alison McQueen
Principal
